CTIS update Scarborough Refugees 13-06-2017
The 5 Syrian families have been in Scarborough about 6 months and are continuing to settle in. There are weekly formal English classes, plus weekly volunteer-run conversation classes at the Summitt, where Kate Abell is one of the key contacts. These classes include craft and other fun activities. Volunteers are from several different churches, as well as non-church-goers. There is a weekly drop-in at the Street, where help is available from the Refugee Council in the formal areas of life: finding a job, schools, banks, GPs, hospitals, buses etc
There is a national “Refugee week” soon. Locally, Amnesty are giving a concert at the Cask, Friday 23 June, 7.30, and have a stall outside Next on Newborough on Sunday 25 June, 1pm till 4pm.
The Friends’ Meeting House host a “Singing for Peace” on Saturday 24 June, 2pm to 4pm and a coffee morning on Saturday 1st July., 10am to 12 noon.
